Mark Woodall

GRADUATE ARCHITECTURAL TECHNICIAN

Meet Graduate Architectural Technician, Mark Woodall

Graduate Architectural Technician Mark tells his story…

Where Did It All Begin?
I have always enjoyed drawing and have an interest in design and technology. Whilst my original decision to become an Architectural Assistant was based on my attraction to hand drawn technical drawing, I soon discovered that an understanding of what I was drawing is important and therefore made it a priority to learn construction, structure, surveying and design.

After leaving school I worked for a local Architectural company whilst obtaining a BTEC Higher National Certificate in Building Studies from the Guernsey College of Further Education and gained 5 years office experience. I then studied at the Southampton Solent University to obtain my BA(Hons) in Architectural Technology whilst becoming an associate member of CIAT (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) and graduate member of the CABE (Chartered Association of Building Engineers).

I now have 18+ years office experience. During this time I have been lucky enough to work with many Architects on projects of all sizes from single room extensions to multi-story luxury apartment complexes and experienced the introduction of CAD (Computer Aided Design) + 3D modelling, Digital Visualizations and now BIM (Building Information Model).

What The Future Holds
I am looking forwards to seeing how technology and demand will affect both the construction and design of future projects.

A Typical Day In Mark’s Shoes
Weather permitting I normally walk to the office, this gives me a chance to wake up and organise the day ahead, it also allows me to get in early and make coffee or tea for the team so they can start the day right.

During a normal day I’ll be preparing drawings for clients, schemes for Planning or working drawings for Building Control. This involves experimenting with layouts and finding design solutions whilst researching new products, forms of construction, regulations, etc. I’m also occasionally sent out to do measured surveys.

I like to end the day feeling that I have solved a problem or at least drawn something that looks good, functions and can be understood by others.

Outside Of Naftel Associates
My hobbies are Photography, Technology, Design, 2D & 3D Visualizations and Science but at the weekends you can normally find me maintaining the garden or seeing to other duties.
